Nelson Mandela's Life

Nelson Mandela belongs to a cadet branch of the Thembu dynasty, which reigns in the Transkei region of South Africa's Eastern Cape Province. He was born in Mvezo, a small village located in the district of Umtata. One of the king's sons, named Mandela, became Nelson's grandfather and the source of his surname. Mandela's father had four wives, with whom he fathered thirteen children (four boys and nine girls). Mandela was born to his third wife.

Study

 When Mandela was nine, his father died of tuberculosis, and the regent, Jongintaba, became his guardian. Mandela attended a Wesleyan mission school located next to the palace of the regent. Following Thembu custom, he was initiated at age sixteen, and attended Clarkebury Boarding Institute. Mandela completed his Junior Certificate in two years, instead of the usual three. Designated to inherit his father's position as a privy councillor, in 1937 Mandela moved to Healdtown, the Wesleyan college in Fort Beaufort which most Thembu royalty attended. At nineteen, he took an interest in boxing and running at the school.




Nelson Mandela appartient à une branche cadette de la dynastie Thembu, qui règne dans la région Transkei de la Province(du Domaine) de Cap(Pèlerine) Orientale de l'Afrique du Sud. Il est né à Mvezo, un petit village situé dans le quartier d'Umtata. Un des  fils du roi, nommés Mandela, est devenu le grand-père de Nelson et, donc, la source de son nom de famille. Le père de Mandela avait quatre femmes, avec qui il a engendré treize enfants (quatre garçons et neuf filles). Mandela est le fils de sa troisième femme.

 Etudes

 Quand Mandela avait neuf ans, son père est mort de tuberculose et le régent, Jongintaba, est devenu son gardien(tuteur). Mandela a suivi(servi) une école de mission Wesleyan située à côté du palais du régent. Après la coutume(clientèle) Thembu, il a été amorcé(introduit) à seize ans et suivi(servi) Clarkebury Montant à bord de l'Institut. Mandela a complété(achevé) son Certificat Junior dans deux ans, au lieu des trois habituels. Désigné pour hériter la position(le poste) de son père comme un conseiller privé, en 1937 Mandela a déplacé à Healdtown, le collège(l'université) Wesleyan dans le Fort Beaufort que la plupart de redevance(royauté) Thembu suivie(servie) à dix-neuf, il a pris un intérêt dans la boxe et exécutant(dirigeant) à l'école.
